IMSI AT GEN FERTILITY

A Closer Look at Sperm Selection Before ICSI

Sometimes, male fertility care requires looking beyond sperm count alone. Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI) is a specialised laboratory technique in which sperm are examined under very high magnification before an embryologist selects a sperm for injection into an egg as part of ICSI. At GEN Fertility, IMSI may be considered for selected patients when clinically appropriate, following evaluation of the couple’s fertility factors.

A Closer Look at Each Step

A carefully planned IMSI journey, combining personalised fertility care with precision embryology.

01— Fertility & Semen Evaluation

The journey begins with assessment of both partners. For the male partner, semen parameters and relevant fertility history are reviewed. Previous fertility treatment and fertilisation history may also be considered before deciding whether an advanced sperm-selection approach is appropriate.

02— Ovarian Stimulation & Egg Retrieval

Because IMSI is performed as part of an IVF/ICSI cycle, the female partner undergoes ovarian stimulation and monitoring followed by egg retrieval according to the planned protocol.

03—Detailed Sperm Assessment

Prepared sperm are examined by the embryology team using high-magnification microscopy to assess sperm morphology in greater detail.

04 — Sperm Selection & Microinjection

A sperm considered suitable based on the laboratory assessment is selected. As with ICSI, the selected sperm is then injected directly into a mature egg to support fertilisation. Standard ICSI likewise involves an embryologist injecting a single sperm directly into an egg.

05— Embryo Development & Transfer

Following fertilisation, developing embryos are monitored in the embryology laboratory. An appropriate embryo may subsequently be selected for fresh transfer or cryopreservation and later frozen embryo transfer according to the treatment plan.

MORE THAN MAGNIFICATION

The Right Technology, Used for the Right Patient

More technology does not automatically mean better fertility outcomes. At GEN Fertility, specialised laboratory techniques such as IMSI should be considered only after evaluating your fertility history, semen parameters, previous treatment and clinical circumstances.

Understanding IMSI: From Selection to Fertilisation

IMSI stands for Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection. It involves examining sperm at high magnification to help select a sperm based on detailed morphology before performing ICSI.
In standard ICSI, an embryologist selects a sperm and injects it directly into an egg. IMSI adds a more detailed, high-magnification morphological assessment before the sperm is selected for microinjection.
A fertility specialist may discuss IMSI in selected circumstances involving male-factor fertility concerns or previous treatment history. However, whether it provides additional clinical benefit needs to be considered carefully because evidence for improved live-birth outcomes remains insufficient.
IMSI is designed to provide additional morphological information during sperm selection, but it should not be presented as guaranteeing better fertilisation, pregnancy or live-birth outcomes.
No. IMSI is an additional laboratory technique rather than a routine requirement for every IVF/ICSI cycle.
The IMSI treatment cost in Hyderabad may vary depending on the fertility centre, IVF/ICSI treatment plan, laboratory procedures, medications and other services required.

IMSI FAQs

It’s natural to have questions when a treatment involves advanced embryology. Here are some answers to help you understand IMSI with greater clarity.

IMSI is an advanced sperm-selection technique that uses high magnification to examine sperm morphology before a selected sperm is injected into an egg using ICSI.

Both ultimately use microinjection of a single sperm into an egg. IMSI adds a higher-magnification morphological assessment during sperm selection before ICSI is performed.

It may be discussed for selected patients based on male fertility factors, sperm characteristics and previous fertility-treatment history. It is not routinely necessary for every IVF/ICSI patient .

It should not be promised to do so. Current HFEA assessment states that there is insufficient moderate/high-quality evidence to determine whether IMSI improves live-birth rates for most fertility patients or those undergoing treatment for male-factor infertility.

Not necessarily. IMSI provides an additional method of examining sperm morphology, but current evidence does not establish that it produces better live-birth outcomes than conventional ICSI for most patients.
